Kirq is Canada\u2019s only quantum-safe test bed*<\/em><\/p>\n

Qu\u00e9bec, Jan. 28, 2026: As quantum computing advances threaten the encryption that protects financial transactions, health data and Canada\u2019s critical networks, Numana is launching a new component of Canada\u2019s only quantum-safe test bed, giving Canadian industry a secure location to test quantum-secure communications systems before it\u2019s too late.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In the near future, quantum computers will be able to crack the codes needed to break into bank accounts, health profiles and every network Canadians rely on almost instantly. Numana\u2019s Kirq is Canada\u2019s only quantum-safe tech test bed. Kirq simulates a real-<\/p>\n

world environment to test quantum-secure technologies, identify vulnerabilities in existing networks and assess solutions before they are deployed at scale. The Qu\u00e9bec City test bed is hosted at Universit\u00e9 Laval\u2019s Centre for Optics, Photonics and Lasers (COPL) and the National Optics Institute (INO) in Qu\u00e9bec City, Canada\u2019s largest centre of excellence in optics and photonics.<\/p>\n

\u201cQuantum computing will reshape cybersecurity,\u201d said Bernard Duval, president and CEO of Numana. \u201cBanks, health systems, governments and telecom providers operate in the digital economy. For years, digital encryption has protected us well \u2013 we don\u2019t think twice about banking online. But we are in a race against time now for new encryption to be tested at Kirq and implemented before bad actors and state-sponsored hackers have quantum computing power. Kirq gives organizations a way to understand their vulnerabilities and make informed upgrade decisions before it\u2019s too late. Canada has been a leader on quantum. For our own security, it\u2019s critical that our nation lead on quantum-safe networks as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

While others operate around the world, Kirq is Canada\u2019s only quantum test bed. With the launch of the Qu\u00e9bec City location, Kirq is a complete loop, serving Canada from Sherbrooke, Montr\u00e9al and Qu\u00e9bec City, as well as sub-locations. Kirq is open to start-ups, small and medium-sized enterprises, large companies, academic institutions and international partners, with scalable access based on operational needs across sectors including financial services, health care, defence, telecommunications and critical infrastructure.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Some of the world\u2019s biggest and most cutting-edge companies join forces with Numana at Kirq \u2013 like Toshiba, Nokia, Bell and Telus \u2014 alongside hundreds of other quantum experts.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Kirq test bed allows quantum-secure communications tech to be tested on live networks that mirror real-world operating conditions, helping them assess integration with existing infrastructure and reducing risks associated with large-scale deployment.<\/p>\n

At Universit\u00e9 Laval, COPL will oversee the implementation and operation of the Qu\u00e9bec City site, supporting testing, validation and technology demonstration activities using advanced photonics and quantum research infrastructure.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis collaboration allows Universit\u00e9 Laval to contribute directly to the development and testing of quantum cybersecurity technologies and to support their adoption by industry and public-sector partners,\u201d said Eug\u00e9nie Brouillet, vice-rector of research, creation and innovation at Universit\u00e9 Laval.<\/p>\n

The National Optics Institute (INO) will serve as a co-designer, host and technical facilitator of the infrastructure in Qu\u00e9bec City, supporting the validation of quantum photonics technologies, including secure terrestrial and satellite communications.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis test bed allows us to test how next-generation secure communications technologies work across real networks, including connections between ground-based and satellite systems,\u201d said Alain Chandonnet, president and CEO of INO. \u201cBy validating these technologies with industry partners, we can help ensure they perform reliably and are ready for deployment as communications networks continue to evolve.\u201d<\/p>\n

The expansion of Kirq aligns with Canada\u2019s National Quantum Strategy and federal plans to migrate government IT systems to quantum-safe cryptography by 2035. It also supports broader efforts to position Canada as a global leader in the development and deployment of quantum technologies.<\/p>\n
